 Double loss at Breaker Park

Double loss at Breaker Park

7/05/2008 3:54:00 PM
SOCCER: Football was welcomed back to the shores of Port Elliot this weekend after a four week break, and what a transformation.

After a lot of hard work the main pitch has now been moved seven metres closer to the clubrooms thus eliminating the need for the concrete cricket pitch to be covered every year.

This final piece of work now puts Breaker Park well within the top five grounds in South Australia and thus enables the club to apply for exhibition games, the like of which brought Barcelona here back in 05.

The club, players and supporters would like to thank all who donated their time and efforts into the project.

First visitors to grace the new pitch were Sturt Marion who were in last year's division one and currently sitting on top of the ladder.

Reserves

For the first time this season the reserves were left without their regular goalkeeper so the versatile Q backer left his spot in defence and donned the gloves.

The first 20 minutes saw both teams jostle for domination, and both goalkeepers were soon brought into action.

Sturt tested first as Breakers' centrelink youngster Paul Mitchell skipped past two defenders and flashed home a sharp cross, which so nearly got deflected for an own goal.

The deadlock was broken on the 20-minute mark when a cracking half volley from 25 yards could only be parried by Q backer only to fall straight into the path of the number nine who netted from close range.

Subway Kim Bileki stole the rest of the half with his wizardly skills the likes of with are usually only seen by the followers of Ronaldo.

He is a mercurial player who can turn the opposition upside down and inside out before they even no he's gone by them.

His delivery of the ball to the feet of Skinaldo in the closing stages of the half warranted a goal but Skinaldo was denied by a flying fingertip save by the Sturt keeper.

In the second half Breakers took total control of the game and sensing this Sturt started to pull even more players behind the ball.

This created a nail biting final 20 minutes with the Sturt goal under constant attack, but despite the efforts an equaliser could not be found and to rub salt into the wounds Sturt broke and with the last kick of the game wrapped up a second.

Final Score: Southern Breakers 0 Sturt Marion 2

Despite the scoreline Breakers were well pleased with their efforts and coach Cougar Butler had no hesitation in naming the Middleton General Store man of the match to debutant Drew Barrymore who had an outstanding first game for the club.

Seniors

Playing the same settled team that had played so well in the past two games, coach Walter Smith sent his team out well fired up in front of the largest crowd seen at Breaker Park in three seasons.

Both teams were determined to stamp their authority onto the game and it wasn't long before the referee had to cool a few heads with a stern word.

Once things settled down General Higgons was soon marshalling his troops, as with Bileki, Higgons is in a class of his own and the recapture of his services this year has been a huge boost for the club.

Jason Giambi was first to fire a shot in anger after a superb one two with Snickers Baker released the youngster who flashed a shot just inches over the bar.

It wasn't going to be a walk in the park though as Sturt pressed forward at every opportunity testing Cat Butler whose reflexes and agility are impressing the many scouts who are touting for his signature.

On the hour mark it was Butler who would be retrieving the ball from the net, a high ball over the back four caught Breakers flatfooted in defence and the pacy winger slipped through to slide the ball under the advancing Butler who could only watch on as the ball agonisingly went in off the post.

Just as Breakers began to settle before the break, a mix up in the box saw Jedi Junior loose his footing and in doing so inadvertently bring down his opponent.

The referee pointed to the spot and even though Butler guessed right he could do little to stop the second going in off the same post.

The second half settled into much the same pattern as the reserves but as the game wore on tempers began to fray and Snickers had to be pulled aside by the ref who told him to quit his jibber jabber.

Chances were rare for both teams in the later stages but two efforts stand out; one by Ryan Quarantine who volleyed wide from 12 yards, and again Giambi was denied by the keeper when one-on-one.

Final score: Southern Breakers 0 Sturt Marion 2

A disappointing result given the possession Breakers controlled, with the Video Ezy man of the match going to Iain Curry who was simply too hot for the opposition

Breakers take to the team bus this week with an away trip to Adelaide Budapest in what will be the first ever clash between the two clubs.

An unexpected vacancy has come up in the sponsorship department, with the withdrawal of Joshy Shearers sponsor, Haircare.

STAR PLAYER ... Glenn Higgons was typically solid and aggressive in the Seniors midfield line. Sadly, the Breakers' forward line couldn't penetrate a resilient Sturt Marion back line despite his non-stop efforts.
