Breakers draw on muddy pitch

13/08/2008 1:58:00 PM
SOCCER: In conditions replicating that of the famous 1915 battle of the Somme clash between Germany and England, Breakers took on Adelaide Budapest in a battle to avoid the dreaded drop zone.

With the reserves game called off, Coach Stuart Smith had available his complete squad for the first time this season and despite Skinaldo's push for a place in the starting line up, decided to stick with the tried and tested General Higgins in attack.

A blistering start by Breakers saw the deadlock broken within a minute, a superb ball from Craig Davidson unlocked the Budapest defence allowing Iain Pentax to go one-on-one with the keeper.

Without giving him an option Pentax slotted the ball into the far corner.

With conditions getting worse by the minute the game soon got bogged down and little chances were created until just before half time when Budapest finally managed to get the ball wide on the right.

The winger whipped in a telling cross which found the number nine unmarked at the far post who slid with the ball across the goal line to bring the scores level.

With any hope of the graceful game returning gone, the second half settled into a stalemate as neither team could hope to conjure an opening of any kind.

As time wore on it became hard to distinguish who was who, so a great sigh of relief went up when the mud drenched referee finally blew the full time whistle.

The final score was Southern Breakers 1 drew with Adelaide Budapest 1.

All in all a fair result given the conditions, with the only casualty of the day being the pitch.

Battling his way through the mud, the Subway man of the match award goes to John Jones for taking ball and all in his battle with Budapest's winger.

This week Breakers travel to Hahndorf to take on its nearest rivals as they fight to stay above the drop zone, a win a must.

Seats are limited for this fixture so members of the travel club are advised to be at Breaker Park at 10am sharp.
