NETBALL: After beginning academy training in February 30 girls went on to be selected to represent the region in the Regional Championship held at ETSA Park on July 8 and 9.
Under 13's
Being led by captain Kelsey Williams and vice captain Peyton Kluske the under 13 team fought a hard battle in its first game together going down to Mt Lofty by three.
The next game they faced Spencer and again went down by four goals and Spencer was the eventual winner.
Murray, who finished second, then beat Southern by five, all were close games that came down to the wire.
Coaches Smiley and Amy Hoffmann had some difficult decisions to make to try and keep the girls morale high.
Round four gave the team its first win, knocking off Northern by two goals.
This was followed by another win over Eyre, the score 14 to 6.
In the last game on Wednesday the under 13's also fought to the end, going down to the newly formed Onkaparinga Region by five goals.
After a much-earned rest the girls came out firing on Thursday and showed Lower North how to play netball.
A win in the final round would have given the team a spot in the top four unfortunately a draw would not with South East and Southern on even ground the final result was 15 all.
After lots of close games the Southern Region Under 13 teal finished in fifth spot.
Peyton Kluske (Langhorne Creek) and Kelsey Williams (Victor Harbor) were both selected in the top 10 under 13's for the championship, congratulations girls.
Under 15's
The Southern Region's Under 15 team, coached by Sue Tawera and Tash Healey, was extremely successful.
Against Mt lofty the girls notched up there first win by a convincing 21 goals.
The second round against Spencer was a little tougher but Southern came out on top by two goals.
Round three was the team's first loss against Murray, who was the eventual runner-up, by 20 goals.
The true character and determination of these 10 girls saw them win the next game against Northern by seven.
They followed this up, defeating Eyre by 5.
The last game on Wednesday saw some tired girls going down by one goal to the Onkaparinga Region.
These girls were very excited about the challenge facing them on Thursday morning against Lower North who was at this stage undefeated.
What a game to watch with an admirable result in a draw, 15 all.
This game was followed by a four-goal defeat to South East.
The girls finish third and had to face a tough Murray team in the final.
Led by captain Zoe Glazbrook and vice captain Elly Cleggett these girls fought a gallant fight and gave spectators an exciting game to watch.
The girls held the lead for all but two minutes of the game, where a much larger Murray team ran it out to win by four goals, a 16 goal turn around from the first time they met.
The under 15 team ended up third in what was a very tough competition.
Under 17's
The Southern Region's Under 17's, led by Elissa Brokenshire and Tarlie Smith (co-captains), had a tough fight for the entire championships.
The team started with an easy win against Mt Lofty, 30-9. This was followed by a one goal loss to Spencer which could have gone either way.
In round three the girls faced a very determined Murray team, who never gave up an easy goal, to go down by 7.
Round four saw the one goal win go Southern's way against Northern 21-20.
Karen Thorn (coach) had some tough decisions to make with injury and illness playing havoc with the girls.
Eyre, another tough opponent who don't give an inch, took the game by 17 and Eyre ended up winning the championships.
In the last game for the day the under 17's faced the new outfit in Onkaparinga and it ended in a 15 all draw.
Southern under 17's came up against Lower North first thing Thursday morning and proved too strong for them taking the points 23-14.
In the last game the girls came up against South East who proved too strong.
The team ended up in sixth spot which, again, was a huge effort against some much stronger, larger regions.
Well done to all girls and congratulations to Verity Jennings (Myponga) who gained her National C Grade umpiring badge.
Despite a nasty injury she battled on and gained her badge.
