The world at his hooves

POLO: Scott Tonkin is only 15 years of age and has been playing polo for as long as he can remember.

Growing up on a 60 acre property at Wistow, the youngster has nine playing horses and will be one of South Australia's players promoted by the Paspaley Polo in the City series, which will be played in Adelaide in December.

The co-director of Polo Enterprises Australia (PEA), Janek Gazecki says the national series will be played in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and for the first time, Adelaide.

"The series brings polo to the people by staging the events in the capital cities.

"It is designed to promote Australia's professional polo players, some of which are the best in the world and we also want to dispel the elitist tag with which the sport has traditionally been burdened.

"PEA seeks out up and coming polo talent around Australia and offers them the opportunity to play in the series.

"I saw Scott play in Windsor, NSW last month and was immediately impressed with his talent.

"At 15 he is certainly one of Australia's most promising up and coming players.

"I didn't see him miss a ball and we are very excited to have Scott playing at our inaugural event in Adelaide this year," Janek said.

Scott has found it difficult juggling his schoolwork with polo, as he realises the importance of a good education, but also sees a great chance to play polo at the highest level.

"I want to receive the best education possible, so that if polo does not work out I will still be open to other opportunities.

"The top players are going to come to Adelaide and show what polo has to offer and I am eagerly looking towards playing and mixing it with the best in the country.

"It is the first time this has happened in Adelaide and it will be exciting.

"I hope it raises the profile of polo and gets more people to come out to local polo clubs," Scott said.

Scott has been playing mostly at the Adelaide Polo Club at Mount Barker and cut his teeth at Strathalbyn and Ballandown.

Influenced heavily by Mum (Sue) and Dad (Gordon), former polo players at Strathalbyn and Adelaide Polo Clubs, Scott respects a game that he has loved right from the start.

"I was eight years old and I remember walking around the ground with a hand stick practicing to hit the ball.

"I love the game and now I have some great opportunities to travel, meet new people and to venture into the game more," Scott said excitedly.

Scott's last polo match was in Sydney at the Gundalong tournament held at Garangula.

The youngster scored two goals in the final and his team won by three goals.

While in Sydney he had specialised coaching from Andrew Williams, another member of the Paspaley Polo in the City squad, who had a four goal handicap and captain of the Australian Polo Team in 2007.

"I learnt a lot of new things and he helped me to work on the points he thought I was weak at," Scott said.

Polo players are based on their handicap and it goes from -2 to 10 and Scott is currently -1 with a rocket.

"My goal is to reach four goals, as that is what most professionals are at and although I play because I love it, the higher the handicap, the better you get paid.

"This will give me greater opportunities and the independence to travel the world," Scott said enthusiastically.

Scott has been playing competitively for four years and besides for the challenge of competing in the up-coming Paspaley Polo in the City series in December his other goal is to be considered for the next Junior World Cup in two years.

"I have been very fortunate to have quality people around and guiding me in polo from Mum and Dad to Andrew Williams to the Freschis' at Ballandown," Scott said thankfully.

Scott is mixing it with the best, as he continues to emerge in the sport of polo.

Whether it is being taught by a former Australian captain or learning more tricks playing with Argentinean professionals Alejo and Jacinto, Scott Tonkin is eager to learn and aims to be the best he can possibly be.
