SURF LIFESAVING: On Sunday at the Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club a state conference was held and a surprise was bestowed upon three of its most loyal and hard working members.
Colin Sibly, Troy Irvin and Chris Smoker were awarded National Medals for their service to the lifesaving club. Colin Sibly is a life member and has played nearly every role at the iconic club and Troy Irvin is a new life member and has a heavy involvement in the surfboat crews.
Chris Smoker joined the Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club in 1976 and has been a chief instructor for many years, been a member of jet boat crews, done 1000's of hours of patrols and been the "mum" of the club.
"I had no idea I was going to be awarded with the medal, but I am overwhelmed.
"I have always been very proud of being part of the club, as it is very special to me.
"I look around the streets and I can see many of the kids I trained and put through the club still involved and they have their children involved.
"That is so very rewarding," Chris said.
Chris has trained many lifesavers in gaining their bronze medallion and had a great association with Joe Sibly.
"Joe thought women never should be involved in the beach side of things, but I think he would be proud of his girl," Chris said with a smile.
Chris now does the odd patrol and enjoys spending time with her two beautiful granddaughters.
"They will be the next generation of lifesavers at Port Elliot," Chris said proudly.
