FOOTBALL: Last Sunday saw the 10 GSFL clubs visit Encounter Bay for the annual Great Southern League Mini Colt Carnival and against good competition Strathalbyn came home with the trophy and flag for the second successive year.
Divided into two divisions, Strathalbyn was far too superior for Encounter Bay, Saints, Victor Harbor and Langhorne Creek on oval A, although Victor were a close runner-up in that division, losing to the Roosters by only seven points and winning every other game convincingly.
On oval B Yankalilla defeated their more fancied opponents McLaren, Willunga, Myponga/Sellicks and Mount Compass to set up an exciting final with Strath.
The grand final started at a cracking pace and the Tigers, kicking with the wind, quickly took a two-goal lead.
The Strathalbyn supporters were silenced, but the young Rooster outfit were no easy beats and against a strong headwind began to work the ball forward to score a goal against the run of play.
The Rooster back line defended magnificently against a flood of Tigers and with only seconds to go set up a running goal to level the majors two apiece.
The half time break saw Strath coach Ron Blight calm and quiet.
He had sensed that his young charges had weathered the storm and it was now Strathalbyn's turn to go with wind.
The siren sounded for the final half of the grand final and as the coach had predicted his players took control.
The young Tigers kicked a major late in the half against the play, but the Roosters had piled on three majors to end the game five goals four points to three straight goals.
A great day won by Strathalbyn, but a day enjoyed by over 250 youngsters and families, cooking barbeques and wearing all the club colours of the GSFL clubs.
