You can hop on new bus services

VICTOR HARBOR - Victor Harbor's new community bus service is up and running and has been since the start of the school term, almost three weeks ago.

The service, which is jointly funded by the state government and City of Victor Harbor replaces community school bus services within the town but is also available to members of the general public.

The process of awarding the contract has been a drawn out process, with bus companies originally submitting tenders to the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure on April 8, with services intended to start on April 28.

After the services to be offered under the contract were revised, operators were required to resubmit their tenders.

The Times understands that operators, Genesis Tour and Charter, were only advised that they had won the contract only days before having to put the service in place on July 21.

Mark Oliphant from the City of Victor Harbor said, although it may not have been widely known, people had always been able to use the school buses that the new service replaces.

"People are most definitely able to use this service as well," Mr Oliphant said.

The service comprises of two routes, with one service each in the morning and afternoon.

The first route starts from Morgan Park at 7.45am and travels around Encounter Bay and then back towards the high school, kindergarten and Victor Primary R-7 school.

It then travels on to the TAFE and arrives at the Encounter Lutheran School at 8.54am.

In the afternoon the route travels in the opposite direction, starting at Encounter Lutheran School at 3.15pm.

It arrives back at Morgan Park at 4.25pm.

The other route commences in Sutherland Avenue, Hayborough at 7.50am and travels through Hayborough and McCracken to the Victor Harbor R-7 school, arriving there at 8.15am.

It then loops back to Investigator College, the high school and kindergarten and travels via Lindsay and Torrens Streets back to the Victor R-7 school.

In the afternoon it picks students up from the R-7 school at 3.30pm and travels along Torrens and Victoria Streets to the high school.

The route then goes up to Investigator and finishes up back in Hayborough at 4.20pm.

The service operator, Genesis Tour and Charter advises passengers to be at their bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival time.

Nice to see something positive being done to combat global warming, reduce carbon emissions and save the pensioners and others doing it hard a bob or two. More please.
