LANGHORNE CREEK - Pope Benedict XVI had the chance to enjoy a taste of Langhorne Creek as he headed back to Rome this week.
The Lake Breeze 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen by Qantas as one of five wines (one French Champagne, two Australian whites, two Australian reds for the special charter flight from Sydney as part of the airline's support for World Youth Day.
The flight left Sydney on Monday carrying the Pope, the Papal party and accompanying international media.
The local winemaker, Greg Follett, said he felt honoured that the Langhorne Creek red had been chosen for such an important flight.
"Everyone at the winery was really excited to hear the news - it's quite a talking point around the district," Mr Follett said.
Lake Breeze wines have been on Qantas' business class flights for a couple of months, but Robyn Follett said it was a big surprise to receive a very short email informing the couple that their wine would be on the Pope's flight.
When The Times phoned on Monday, Mrs Follett said she was still waiting to hear more about how many wines were involved and why the local one was chosen.
The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded the Best Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy at the Sydney Royal Wine Show earlier this year.
