GOOLWA - Sixty-two people braved the rain to help see the Oscar W return to cruising the River Murray last Friday.
The Goolwa Wharf was crowded with volunteers from Armfield Slip, Signal Point, the Lions Club of Goolwa, and Goolwa Patchers, eager to assist the Friends of the PS Oscar W with the paddle steamer's stability test.
The test is a requirement before a survey certificate can be granted to enable the PS Oscar W to operate as a commercial vessel.
A successful pass means all systems will be go for the historic paddle steamer to carry passengers in time for its 100th birthday celebrations on the October long weekend.
The secretary for the Friends of the PS Oscar W, Christina Sommervaille, is hopeful this will be the case, with the test results to be announced in the coming weeks.
Providing the Oscar W is given the green light, a re-commissioning ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 5.
As part of the birthday celebrations, the paddle steamer will be offering rides from October 4-6 at a special price of $10, with children under 15 admitted free.
"We hope the local community will come down to the Goolwa Wharf to help celebrate and take part in this exciting new era ahead of us," Christina said.
"Come down for a memorable and nostalgic experience and inspect all the work that has been carried out to ensure that the PS Oscar W will continue to operate for the next 100 years."
The first regular steaming schedule will commence on Sunday, November 23.
