Next stage of ramp upgrade set to start

ENCOUNTER BAY - The first stage of upgrading the Bluff boat ramp at Encounter Bay is expected to be finished by the end of the week.

The City of Victor Harbor's director of environment and infrastructure services, Peter Bond, said Ellers Earthmoving should complete its contract this week, including completing the bund wall so water can be drained to allow for the ramp itself to be upgraded.

The first stage of the ramp rebuild has involved widening and deepening of the channel and the channel markers were expected to be put in place before today.

Tenders have been called for the next stage - the construction of the new ramp, a rock wall between the car park and the water, and the provision of two floating pontoons.

Five contractors have been asked to supply their tenders for the project before May 5, in time for a decision on the successful contractor to be made by the council on May 12.

Mr Bond said he aims to have the next stage underway within two to three weeks.

At Monday night's meeting the council, meeting in camera, decided to provide about $60,000 more to Ellers Earthmoving as a variation to the contract.

This, according to Mr Bond, was to cover a miscalculation made when the original plans were prepared.

"It was related to the fact that when the design was done, the floor level was 400mm higher than it should have been," Mr Bond said.

This is understood to have involved a miscalculation of tidal levels.

Mr Bond said the council had been aware that additional funds and work would be required when the contract was let and had made Ellers Earthmoving aware of the problem.

The council is also expected to further add to the contract payment to Ellers Earthmoving to take into account additional rock that had to be removed.

However, Mr Bond indicated that the cost of this work was less than had been expected.
