New visitor centre for Yankalilla

YANKALILLA- After several years in the pipeline, the Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre now looks set to receive a new home.

The District Council of Yankalilla agreed to proceed with its construction last week with an approved budget of $390,970.

The centre currently rents a property on Main South Road and has been looking for a new site for the last three years.

While a number of options were considered, the Yankalilla Museum was recently selected to be the centre's new home, land already owned by council.

The site allows for the provision of a car park for tour bus access, which is not possible at the current centre.

The council consulted volunteers from the Visitor Information Centre in finalising the design of the new centre.

Built in the 1980s, the museum was constructed to replicate the surrounding historical buildings, an initiative council intends to pursue.

"We want the new Visitor Information Centre to fit in with the existing buildings on the site, including the current toilets because we felt it would be advantageous to use them rather than build new ones," chief executive Roger Sweetman said.

"It has taken a long time, but now we have a design, the cost and then the agreement, we will be able to proceed."

Mr Sweetman said the relocation of the Visitor Information Centre to a permanent home would benefit surrounding tourist facilities, including the museum.

Council is currently finalising the construction drawings and will lodge a full development application for approval, with building expected to commence in July or August.

Steve Ryles, manager of environment and planning, said the simple construction method required means that hazards should be few and hopes the centre to be completed by the end of the year.
