GOOLWA - The Goolwa Children's Centre has been selected to be part of a national trial in one of the Rudd government's 'New Directions for Early Childhood' scheme.
The program is looking at how to make early childhood education more accessible and the centre's preschool director, Pam Lutze, said the extra funding provided for the trial was "wonderful".
Under the trial, kindergarten children will attend an extra session per week, taking their total number of hours to 15.
Forty-eight of the centre's 54 children enrolled in the kindergarten programs had been able to take up the additional hours and Pam said the centre was looking at different ways to help the others access the extra time.
She said, that as a "one-stop shop" for integrated kindergarten and childcare programs, the centre had not needed to make too many changes when implementing the trial at the beginning of the term.
"Our data will help to shape the future though," Pam said. "We are hoping that the trial will be extended into next year.
A revamp of Early Childhood Education was one of the key platforms of the Rudd Labor government when contesting last year's election, when it promised all four-year-olds would have access to 15 hours of pre-schooling each week.
Pam said pre-schooling was not just about getting children ready for school but sought to develop resilience, a love of learning and a love of play.
"It’s important for them to be children," she said. "Research has shown that, when children are very young, we need to nurture their confidence, trust and motivation."
"They are ready to soak up so much. We take our cues from them."
