MOUNT COMPASS - After six months, Mount Compass finally has a permanent doctor again.

Dr Sushil Jaiswal started consulting at the Mount Compass surgery last Tuesday and is quickly getting to know his patients and the local community.

Dr Jaiswal comes to Mount Compass after seven months working in Woomera and Roxby Downs. Before that he spent 10 years consulting in Delhi, India after graduating from the well-regarded Maulana Azad Medical College.

Delhi has a population of 14 million people and Dr Jaiswal said the environment he found in Woomera, with its population of just 200 people and arid location, was "unexpected".

"I think most people in the world have a picture of Australia with its many beaches," he said. "Woomera was the stark opposite of that."

He finds Mount Compass to be a beautiful spot and hopes to be able to use the surroundings when painting landscapes and reviving his long neglected love of photography.

Dr Jaiswal said he and his family had come to Australia because he wanted to give his children "better options".

"They love it," he said of his son (14) and daughter (10). "They are very happy."

He said his family was amazed at the welcome shown to them since arriving in the country.

"We were a little worried we might not be accepted," he said, "but everyone has been very friendly."

Dr Jaiswal said he and his family are now settled in Australia and he intends to support both the Indian and Australian cricket teams.

He has watched several games of Australian Rules but says he is still trying to work out the rules.

"It's a very muscular game," he noted. "I had to treat a lot of injuries from football whilst I was in Roxby Downs."

His son has embraced soccer and now plays for his school and Dr Jaiswal said, "I love it; there is a real art of playing this game."

Dr Jaiswal's wife is an acupuncturist and naturopath and is studying to gain Australian accreditation.

He has a special interest in paediatric medicine and is full of praise for the Australian health system.

"In Australia there are more guidelines and more help from the authorities and peers and colleagues," he said.

"In India we don't have the same opportunities for a unified path. The care here is more standardised, which is good."
